Theme Update & A Short Hiatus

by Anesthezea on February 5, 2010

in Blog News & Maintenance

The blog will be undergoing some changes over the next few days as I attempt to update and tweak the new theme. I hope the changes don’t inconvenience you too badly, but the new theme should make things run smoother and look better. That’s my hope, anyway. :)

Manic Monday #199

by Anesthezea on February 1, 2010

in Meme: Manic Monday

What was your best day of the week last week and why? Yesterday was pretty nice, even though I had to be up before dawn for work. Work was just busy enough with a lot of nice customers. After work, I got to spend a little time with The Hubbs before he had to go to work. Then I spent the rest of the evening with Danny – he’s learned to say “Hello” and give high-fives. So cute!

What’s the longest you’ve ever gone without sleep? About three or four days. A few years ago, I went through a pretty bad patch in regards to my depression and anxiety. I had a few too many panic attacks and took to avoiding sleep. The less sleep I got, the more anxious I was, until it seemed like I couldn’t control anything. My OCD got out of control and I was checking locks and the stove three or four times every hour. It got very ugly in the end and I had to get help. I read somewhere that you can go about 264 (?) hours without sleep before your body completely shuts down and you die. That’s a morbid thought.

Is how old you look and/or how old you feel right now different from your actual age? At the moment, I feel much younger than I am despite the “fine lines” creeping up on me around the eyes. “Fine lines” be damned! :)

Jackie says, “I love books with complicated plots and unexpected endings. What is your favourite book with a fantastic twist at the end?”

So, today’s question is in two parts.

1. Do YOU like books with complicated plots and unexpected endings?

I love books with complicated plots and unexpected endings!

2. What book with a surprise ending is your favorite? Or your least favorite?

I suppose my least favorite would be Dan Brown’s The DaVinci Code. I did like the ideas it represented, but the writing style combined with the chapter-to-chapter plot twists left me feeling manipulated and rather mulish.

One of my favorites doesn’t really have a surprise ending as a surprise middle! It’s Sarah Waters’ Fingersmith. I can’t tell you how much I love-love-love this book! It’s suspenseful, romantic, mysterious, sexy, has loads of historical details, very in-depth characters, an extremely intricate and well-spun plot, loads of twists and turns and I adore it so much I’m gushing. :)

Another favorite of mine is Chuck Palahniuk’s Invisible Monsters. I don’t really know how to describe it. It’s a dark comedy, I suppose, with fashion and models, and many, many unexpected twists and turns. I’ve heard that they want to make a movie of it, but I don’t really see how a film could do the book justice. Many of the twists work simply because it’s a book.

So, what about you? Do you like twists and turns and surprises in your reads?

Teaser Tuesday – January 26, 2010

by Anesthezea on January 26, 2010

in Meme: Teaser Tuesday

MizB says it goes like this:

Grab your current read
Let the book fall open to a random page
Share two teaser sentence from that page, between lines 7 & 12
Share the book title
Please avoid spoilers

My Teaser for today is from P.G. Wodehouse’s Right Ho, Jeeves, an old favorite I’ve been happily revisiting.

I mean to say, while firmly resolved to tick him off, I
didn’t want to gash his feelings too deeply. Even when displaying the iron hand, we Woosters like to keep the
thing fairly matey.

PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT with either the link to your own Teaser Tuesdays post, or share your 2 Teasers in a comment here (if you don’t have a blog). Thanks!

Tuesday Tunes – Week #118

by Anesthezea on January 26, 2010

in Meme: Tuesday Tunes, Video

If you had $50 to spend on music what would you buy.

I’d replace a few of the cd’s that were stolen from me back when I was a single lady living in a tiny apartment complex that had an untrustworthy maintenance crew.

If you had a chance to see any band @ any venue, who would you see and where?

Hmm. Coldplay, maybe. Rufus Wainwright, definitely.

If there was one band that you’d like to see reform, who would it be?

Pain. A local band that was very popular with my friends and I in college. They were so much fun! A sort of ska/punk kind of band with a lot of silly lyrics. Oh, how I miss them!

Manic Monday #198

If you could only have one section of the bookstore to visit, which section would it be?

The clearance section! I am a sucker for a good sale.

If you could only subscribe to one publication for the rest of your life, what would it be?

I couldn’t say. I don’t really read many magazines. Most of this sort of thing is read online – blogs and such. Now and again I’ll pick up a copy of Stargate magazine or read a bit of The Onion.

What activity always makes you lose track of time?

Looking at vids on YouTube. Actually, that’s what I’ve been wasting time on doing this evening. Here, I’ll share:

My only disappointment in the video is that it doesn’t include the incredibly hot, yet far too short, David Hewlett kiss from the film Century Hotel. Here’s the only vid of just the kiss, but it’s on a 5 minute loop so feel free to stop watching after about 20 seconds or so.

in Video

Even if you’ve never seen the show, I highly recommend taking a peek at this vid by Newkidfan, even if it’s just to see how awesome she is at editing and such. :) Here’s what she has to say about the vid:

Title: Language
Fandom: Stargate: Atlantis
Characters: John and the people he loves.
Pairing: Well, um, there’s either none *or* depending on the ship goggles you’re wearing, there can be John/Rodney, John/Teyla, John/Ronon, John/Elizabeth, *or* one big orgy. It’s up to you.
Spoiler: Up to the first half of season 5.
Notes: Big thanks to wyomingnot and valika56 for betaing. You were very helpful.

Plot: Thank you. For everything you… meant to say. ~Teyla to John in “Sateda”.

Find more videos like this on BAM Vid Vault

If you’d like to download a hi-res version of the vid, you can do so at Newkidfan’s Livejournal. Actually, I’d recommend checking out all of her vids. They are more than just fanvids, they’re works of art.

Who’s your favorite author that other people are NOT reading? The one you want to evangelize for, the one you would run popularity campaigns for? The author that, so far as you’re concerned, everyone should be reading–but that nobody seems to have heard of. You know, not JK Rowling, not Jane Austen, not Hemingway–everybody’s heard of them. The author that you think should be that famous and can’t understand why they’re not…

My post isn’t so much about a favorite author as it is about a favorite book: Craig Thompson’s Blankets, a graphic novel published in 2003 by Top Shelf Productions. It’s sincere, honest, sweet, and heartbreaking and it’s one of my favorite books ever. If I could get just one person to read it and love it half as much as I do, I’d be one happy blogger. It’s a coming-of-age autobiography that tells the story of the author’s childhood and early adulthood. It deals with family, sexuality, spirituality, first love, growing up, and trying to find your own way in life.

Site Updates

by Anesthezea on January 21, 2010

in Blog News & Maintenance

There have been a few changes to the blog lately. If any of you visited in the middle of the night while things were a little up in the air, I apologize for the wonkiness.

Changes Made:

1. New layout. I’ve got a three-column theme that isn’t terrible, though I need to tweak the css code a bit to make the sidebars look a little cleaner. Also, the layout is fluid. It looks best at around 1200 resolution, but is also readable (but skinnier) at 740.

2. New header.

3. Google Friend Connect has been added to the left sidebar.

4. The categories have been updated, but I’m still in the process of making sure all the posts are in the right places.

5. I’ve added a plugin that automatically generates a star rating in my review posts. All I have to do is enter a bit of code and it does the rest! It even translates the star images into text when posts are read in Google Reader or in a feed.

Well, now that I’ve made that announcement, I’m going to go bury myself in some nice, smutty slash fic. Ta!
