I’ve decided to reread Neil Gaiman’s short story collection Smoke and Mirrors as an extra peril in the R.I.P. II Challenge. It has been wonderful to revisit some of those stories that have long been favorites of mine. A few years ago, I loaned out my well-thumbed hardback copy of the book and, sadly, never got it back. Yesterday, I gave in to nostalgia and bought a little paperback copy. It’s not the same as my hardback, but it’s what’s inside that counts, yes?
Chivalry by Neil Gaiman
This is probably one of my favorite stories from this collection. In it, Mrs. Whitaker, a pensioner, finds the Holy Grail amidst the jumble of items in a charity shop. Soon after, Galaad, a Knight of the Round Table, shows up at her door hoping to make a trade for the Grail. What follows is a completely charming tale with lovely characters and wonderful dialog.
We Can Get Them for You Wholesale by Neil Gaiman
This story is about Peter Pinter, a rather mild-mannered man who discovers that his fiancĂ©e is cheating on him. Seeking revenge, he searches the phone book for an assassin. He finds one in the form of Ketch, Hare, Burke and Ketch, The Old Firm, a company that offers special discounts for large orders. Peter is a sucker for a good deal, but quickly finds himself in way over his head. This is one of those stories that just sticks with me long after I’ve put the book down. There’s just something so very dark beneath the surface of this one (isn’t that always the way with Gaiman? Dear man!).

Chivalry is one of my favourites as well. And I agree that We Can Get Them For You Wholesale is unforgettable! I still remember reading it for the very first time and loving the twist.
I’ve got this book of short stories tucked away somewhere. I must get it out and read these two as I’m very intrigued now. The only Gaimans I’ve read are Stardust and Good Omens and I *know* I should read more.
I’ve just started Stardust for the R.I.P. II challenge. I’m hoping to finish it before I see the movie – and I’m hoping the movie will still be in theaters when I finish the book. :) I recommend the book of short stories as well as everything else by Gaiman. Neverwhere and Anansi Boys are both especial faves of mine.
You picked two of my favorite Neil Gaiman stories! I absolutely love We Can Get Them For You Wholesale. Perfect example of what a little power can turn into and how dangerous it can be when you’re bargain shopping! ;)

I think Chivalry is my favorite of all, but We Can Get Them For You Wholesale is contending with Troll Bridge for the honor of second favorite. But that’s only of the stories I’ve read so far, since I haven’t had the pleasure of Fragile Things yet. :)
